Warehouse operations guide
Why warehouse totals hide the cause of delay
Warehouse dashboards show receipts, picks, shipments, and labor hours, but they rarely explain what happened between system scans. Existing camera views can add time-based evidence for dock, staging, aisle, and handoff events. The useful starting point is one bounded operating question, joined to WMS or TMS records when those records define the event.
01 · Receiving
What causes long dock-to-stock time?
Receiving can slow down at unloading, receipt verification, staging, or putaway. Split those intervals before adding staff or equipment. Join WMS receipt and putaway records to the visible handoffs, then compare similar loads and shifts. Track trailer queue time separately so it does not hide an internal receiving delay.
How can I reduce delays from receiving to putaway?
- Agree on the clock. For this pilot, dock-to-stock runs from unload start to accepted putaway. Record WMS availability separately if inventory becomes usable later. Do not mix definitions across sites.
- Find the largest wait. Keep unload, receiving checks, staging, and putaway timestamps for the same receipt. Mark missing endpoints as incomplete, not zero-minute waits.
- Match the fix to the delay. Review appointment spacing for arrival queues, receipt exceptions for verification waits, and space or task-release constraints for staging and putaway waits.
- Test one change. Compare the median and 90th percentile, completed receipt count, and incomplete-event share across comparable shifts and load types.
02 · Dock capacity
Why do trailers and dock doors stay occupied?
A dock can appear busy while the load is not moving. Separate queue time before the door, active loading or unloading, pauses during service, and time after work is complete. Joining camera timestamps with appointment, arrival, and departure records helps teams distinguish carrier delay, labor coverage, space constraints, and slow closeout.
03 · Staging
What creates staging congestion?
Staging congestion builds when inbound loads arrive faster than receiving or putaway clears the space, when outbound work competes for the same lanes, or when exception pallets remain unresolved. Measure zone occupancy and dwell over time, then review which upstream arrival or downstream handoff caused the space to remain blocked.
04 · Material handling
How can teams measure forklift utilization?
Within approved camera coverage, forklift time can be classified as active handling, loaded travel, empty travel, or waiting. Report the observed minutes and share of time by zone and shift, with uncertainty for occluded intervals. Camera-derived utilization is an activity measure, not worker identity, productivity scoring, or a replacement for telematics.
05 · Inventory handoffs
Why do inventory handoffs create WMS drift?
WMS drift appears when the digital event and physical handoff do not represent the same state change. Compare expected shipment, receipt, or putaway events with timestamp-aligned footage of the bounded handoff. Classify each event as matched, mismatched, or uncertain, and keep the evidence and resolution status together for review.
06 · Labor flow
Where do warehouse labor handoffs lose time?
Labor hours alone do not show whether a team was working, waiting for material, walking between zones, or blocked by an earlier process. Compare these activity states with completed moves in the same period. Use the result to investigate layout, task release, staging, or shift coverage—not to infer identity or score individual workers.
07 · Existing infrastructure
What can existing warehouse cameras actually measure?
Existing fixed views can measure visible movement, occupancy, dwell, queues, and bounded handoffs when the relevant start and end states appear clearly. They cannot see outside approved coverage or recover a missing system record. Validate lighting, occlusion, timestamps, and representative exceptions before treating any camera-derived metric as an operating measure.
